SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Miss Marie Williams. No. 2 Line, was a visitor to Wellington last week. Mrs. and Miss L. Scanlon, of Kaponga, are spending a holiday in Wanganui. Mrs. C. A. Pease and Mrs. G. L. Pease, of Mangatoki, were weekend visitors to Wanganui. Air Commandant Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Gloucester has been promoted to the newly-created rank of Air Chief Commandant of the ! Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, states; a message from London. What is believed to be the first all-naval wedding celebrated in New Zealand took place at Auckland last week, when Miss Nola Dessa Nadin. W.R.N.S., was married to Third-Class Petty-Officer Elden Ray Allen, United States Navy. The bride and bridesmaid wore their naval uniforms,- and a party of Wrens and American sail-1 ors formed a guard of honour. The ■ ceremony took place at St. Mary's Cathedral, Parnell. Major L. Laurie, one of the three ; women doctors in the Australian! Army Medical Corps, is on leave in; New Zealand. Major Lauric was | born in New Zealand but has spent; most of her life in Australia. She i joined the Medical Corps nine months i ago. She is attached as a pathologist! to the 102nd General Hospital at J Tamworth, New South Wales. Major j Laurie said she had wanted to go overseas with a medical unit, but the policy of the Australian authorities was not to allow women doctors to serve abroad. She is staying with her sister, Miss Alison Laurie, of Auckland. A report by the manager of the New Zealand Forces Club, London, received recently by the New Zealand National Patriotic Fund Board, refers to arrangements that had been made for a New Zealander, Miss Gwenethe Walshe, to give dancing lessons in the club for the benefit of New Zealand servicemen. “It is | thought,” stated the club manager, “that this facility will be much appreciated by all concerned, and our| thanks are due to Miss Walshe for, offering her services in this connec-' tion.”. Miss Walshe is a Wellingtonian. HITHER AND THITHER Raetihi-Atawhai Women’s Institute. A fine display of work done by other Maori institutes was displayed by Mrs. Johnson, of Auckland. on • the occasion of her recent visit to Raetihi to reorganise the Atawhai W.I. Maori members welcomed Mrs. Johnson and among others present were Mrs. Donnelly, president of the Raetihi W.1., and Mesdames Russell and Sandford. The visitor addressed the meeting, which was held at the residence of Mrs. Wright. It was decided to re-form the institute. The first meeting vas held at Mrs. Kaanga’s residence, the president, Mrs. K. Bell, presiding. Following ; the reciting of the Aspirations, two | minutes’ silent prayer for the boys overseas was observed. Others present were Mrs. Kaanga (secretary), Mrs. J. Gray, junr. (treasurer). Mesdames A. Wright, W. Davis, J. Bristol. J. Thompson, also Mrs. R. Gray, sonr., who was nominated as demonstrator for Maori mat making. Mesdames

I Wright and Davis were appointed as 'judges for next meeting, and Mrs. Bristol, hostess. An cnoyable af.ernoon tea was served and the meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. Servicemen Entertained. The Wanganui Y.M.C.A.-Y.W.C.A was well patronised last night by all branches of the services. The tea was provided by the combined Durie Hill Red Cross and Croquet Club, Miss Hamilton being convener for both clubs. A programme organised by Mrs. D. Strachan was well received. Artists who contributed were Mr. H. Tipper (songs), Mrs. Tipper, and Misses Gaze, and Chesswas (trios), Mrs . Dickie (songs). Master Seabrook contributed items on the piano-accordion-Miss L. Dunlop played the accompaniments. Community singing followed.
