MANAWATU CARD

PROSPECTS AT AWAPUNI SIRES’ PRODUCE STAKES Ranking as one of the important autumn fixtures in the New Zealand racing calendar, the Manawatu Racing Club's autumn meeting will be hold at Awapuni to-day, and As a special train will leave here at 7.45 a.m. there should be a good representation of enthusiasts from this district. The absence of the Awapuni Gold Cup, which, would have ensured the presence of Kindergarten, will be regretted. but there is compensation in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, which is generally Avon by a highclass juvenile. Important handicap events are the King George Handicap and the Johnston Memorial. The hack fields have filled well, and in two races there will have to be divisions. Betting will be single-pool. As it is run over seven furlongs, the Sires’ Produce Stakes is the first real test of stamina for the juveniles. Contestants carry penalties according to their stake winnings, hence the Bulandshar colt. Subadar is set to concede weight all round. He won the Nursery Handicap and the Sylvia Handicap at Ellerslie, but was beaten by Royal Glory at Te Rapa recently. Screen appears the most likely improver, as, though beaten into third nlace at Trentham last Saturday, she will be benefited by the race. The Spiral filly has had four starts for two wins and a third, her successes being the Debutant Stakes in the early spring and the Nursery Handicap at the Trentham summer meeting. Wee Bun won a double at the Taranaki meeting and separated Master Dash and Screen at Trentham last Saturday. Likely improvers among the other five contestants are Meermint and Virtuoso, but the performances of the top trio suggest that the others will not have much chance. A feature of the Sires’ Produce' Stakes is the success that has come the way of Koatanui representatives. Mr. G. M. Currie’s colours have been carried to victory in this race seven times in the past 20 years, by Motley, Thaw. Episode, Midinette, Burnish. Submission and P*-?mature, and in addition Absurdum. The Dunce, Tukia, Lady Cavendish. Limerick, Golden Hair. Legatee and Smoke Screen were sired at Koatanui. giving the stud 15 winning representatives in 20 years. That will add to the interest taken in Screen’s display, as she is a daughter | of Sniral and Motley, both bred by Mr. Currie. The King George Handicap field is an excellent one. for it includes recent winners in Rakanui. Yogi. Jonathan Jo. Dal jarrock and Classform, as well as a New Zealand Cup winner in Happy Ending and a Derby winner in Enrich. A brilliant field of sprinters will line up for the Johnston Memorial, with Poutatau, Clarice. Whackie, Autolite, Black Robe, Palora, Prince Plato, Caroline Bay, Minority and Theolateral in the top half of the handicap.
