COLLAPSE OF ATTACK Recd. 1 a.m. Chungking, March 16. A Chinese communique reports that after the complete collapse of the Japanese attack at Hanan a counterattack recaptured at least 27 towns and inflicted heavy casualties on the fleeing enemy, who might be trapped on the north bank of the Yangtze Chungking, March 15. The big Japanese offensive which began on March 8 on a 100-mile stretch on the Yangtze River from Yoochow has collapsed with 20,000 Japanese troops mostly in retreat and under harassing attack, says a Chinese communique. One body ot Japanese has been surrounded and another is almost encircled. The Chinese forces on the northern bank of the Langtze have launched an extensive counter-attack. The communique said: “The .collapse of this offensive, which was designed to project the enemy's communications along the Yangtze, has greatly lessened the danger of another Japanese drive against Changsha."
