OBITUARY
MR. H. J. CLIFTON The death has occurred in Auckland in his 72nd year of Mr. Herbert James .Cliftdn, who was believed to be the oldest commercial traveller in the province. He was a past president of the Auckland Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association and for 45 years he had represented business houses. Mr. Clifton is survived by his wife, two sons and: three daughters, and there are seven grandchildren. MR. THOMAS J. HAMILTON The death has occurred of Mr. Thomas James Hamilton, of 32, Elgin Street, Grey Lynn. Mr. Hamilton was born at Mercury Bay, where he spent the earlier part of his life, subsequently moving to the North Auckland and Thames districts, where he was a well known contractor in the timber industry. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter and three grandchildren. MR. J. CONNOR The death of Mr. John Connor at the Westland Hospital recently removes another of Westland’s pioneers. Mr. Connor was born at Callaghan’s, near Kumara, 74 years ago, and spent, all his life in the district, following most of the time the occupation of gold miner. He was a foundation member of the Kumara Volunteer Band, and at the time of his death was a member of the Kumara Fire Brigade. He was unmarried and is survived by two brothers and two sisters.
MRS. F. LITTLEWOOD. ♦The death has occurred at the Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, of a former old resident of Huntly, Mrs. Agnes Caldwell Littlewood, wife of Mr. Frederick Littlewood. Mrs. Littlewood was born in Ayrshire, Scotland. 56 years ago and was the second daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Shaw. With her parents, she came to New Zealand in 1398 and resided at Huntly. She was married to Mr. Littlewood in 1909. and they lived at Taupiri for a number of years. Mr. and Mrs. T.b’flc’vood then resided at Tuakau for 18 years before going to Huntly a year ago. Mrs Littlewood is survived by her husband, three sons and onp daughter. There are seven grandchildren. mr. t. mcfarlane
A well-known engineer and surveyor, Mr. Thomas McFarlane has died at the aged of 69. Born in Scotland, Mr. McFarlane first.-* inert the maintenance division of the railways in the Auckland Province in 1890. He retired six years later to take up practice as a mine and land surveyor. In 1907 he joined the engineering staff of the Auckland City Council, assuming charge of its surveying work. Two years later he transferred to the AuckJnnd and Suburban Drainage Board. Subsequent!v he served with the Coromandel and Bay of Islands County Councils. In 1920. Mr. McFarlane joined the Public Works Department. and supervised the construction of many important works. In 1940. he retired from the department and for some time was assistant pr<rin«e- to the Franklin County Council. Mr McFarlane is survived by three sons and one daughter.
