IN RUSSIANS’ FAVOUR
EVENTS OF LAST MONTH
Recd. 9 p.m. London, March 14. Whatever the ultimate result of the German counter-stroke at Kharkov, the general position along the whole front has greatly changed in the Russian favour since last month, says the Stockholm correspondent of The Times.
Importance of the Russian elimination of the Demyansk and Rjevv iazma bulges towards Moscow robbed the Germans of valuable forward positions for eventual offensives meantime tying up large Russian forces. It is scarcely thinkable that, the Germans vjfc be able effectively to mount an offensive in the coming months from their present deteriorated lines. The Germans had a busy and costly winter, and the offensive for the rescue of the Donetz Basin must inevitably prejudice the original spring and summer plans. The Germans have temporarily seized a local initiative, which, however, they are unlikely to maintain. The German summer offensve, if launched, appears likely to be confined to a new attempt to conquer the Caucasus, but even this will be less attractive than last year, despite the oil-wells’ undiminished value.
