TRENTHAM CARD

THOMPSON-HANDICAP PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY

Patrons of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Trentham to-day will have the satisfaction of seeing the champion Kindergarten in action in the North Island Challenge Stakes, an event which he has already won two years in succession. This may to a certain extent make up for the disappointment they will feel at being deprived of seeing the three-year-old supremacy decided, as the club has seen fit to'drop the New Zealand St. Leger. Main interest to-day, of course, will lie in the old-established Thompson Handicap, which has in the past brought out the Dominion’s outstanding milers. The field to-day, with sixteen engaged, is as good in numbers as in previous years, but the quality is lacking. Should Neenah be reserved for the open sprint, Monte Cristo, at 8.6, will be left at the top of the handicap. This will give some idea of the class. The issue appears to be between two three-year-olds, Rink (8.4) and Royal Merit (7.9). On performances the former makes most appeal, though his northern rival has shaped so well with big weights in hack events that he is going to be hard to beat. Two more three-year-olds in John Gay and Hippodrome, both of whom are also engaged in the sprint, will have support, and older horses in Monte Cristo, Enrich, Whackie (if reserved) and Daljarrock will have to be considered. Keen interest will also be displayed in the Railway Handicap, in which the carded field of nineteen may be reduced by scratchings because of dual engagements. Three widely-discussed candidates are Clarice, Palora and Beau Vaals, with Soutane and Lady Acora also making appeal. The distance handicap, the Autumn Handicap, finds seven engaged for a stake of £l5OO, and they include an unimpressive trio in Dominate, Dynasty and Filbert. It looks as if Lord Chancellor and Rakanui will command attention.

No one would be foolish enough to look past Kindergarten for the Challenge Stakes, and as there will be no “place” dividends with such a small field, the totalisator turnover will not be of rpuch use to the club. Boulder Dam should be runner-up to the champion.

In the Plunket Nursery form points to Screen, Wee Bun and Master Dash, and in the highweight event Flying Spy, Talenta and War Effort may be in the picture. A big field will line up for the Tinakori Handicap, but Ngamatea, Theolateral, Killeymoon and Damask are four that appeal. The Champion Hack, the concluding event, may be a good betting event, but a form trio are Alchemy, Merry May and Martarawa.

The following may appeal:— Rimu Highweight. Flying Spy, Talenta, War Effort. Plunket Nursery.—Screen, Wee Bun, Master Dash. Challenge Stakes.—Kindergarten. Autumn Handicap.—Lord Chancellor, Rakanui, Gladynev. Tinakori Hack.—Theolateral, Ngamatea, Killeymoon. Thompson Handicap. Rink, Royal Merit, Daljarrock. Railway Handicap.—Clarice, Beau Vaals, Lady Acora. Champion Hack. Alchemy, Merry May, Martarawa. 12.00

Brackets at Trentham to-dav are:— Tinakori Handicap: Foxcatcher and Irish Fox; Nantuckey and Pedantic; Quick Decision and Straight Left; Te Ngarara and Transcript; Valebit and Wise Girl.
