SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Miss Muriel Ratliffe. of the New Plymouth nursing staff, is visiting Wanganui. Mrs. P. Cedarwall has returned to Wanganui after visiting Auckland and Gisborne. Miss J. Luke. Auckland, who has been visiting Wanganui, left yesterday for Wellington. Miss Mary Abbott, Auckland, is the guest of Miss Betty Horsley, Wanganui East. Mrs. E. Whiteford, “Kelburn,” Gonville, has returned from an extended visit to Wellington Petone and the Hutt. Miss Deirdre Bayly, Grey Street, was hostess at a ’ stationery” party on Thursday night in honour ot Miss Betty Horsley, whose marriage to Captain S. 11. Abbott takes place today. A pleasant time was spent and competitions were won by Misses Shirley Gilbert, Mary Abbott, and Mrs. Keith Scoullar. The guest ot honour received many gifts of notepaper and envelopes. When the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newail, and Lady Newall visited the Army clothing repair depot in Wellington their Excellencies were struck by the stupendous nature oi the task. They watched garments being repaired by helpers and the special methods used. The reknitting or socks on a Knitting machine held their interest for some time. His Excellency took great pleasure in knitting the leg or his first sock, and i>auy Newail completed the heel, foot, and toe in quick time. This sock is to be presented to their Excellencies as a memento of their visit. Miss Winifred Stenhouse, dietitian at the Women's College, Sydney University, has been appointed to an important post in the Commonwealth Government nutrition campaign. Her job will be to assist the Government nutrition expert (Dr. Clemens) to teach Australians to make the best use of available ioods and to use substitutes for others in snort supply or unprocurable. The Commonwealth campaign will also include hints about the cooking and preparation of alternative ioods. For instance, when oranges and tomatoes are scarce and potatoes plentiful, it is recommended that to offset the loss of vitamin C, a family of a man, wife and three children should daily eat 21b. of new potatoes' —cooked in their jackets to retain the precious vitamins.

CASTLECLIFF TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD The annual meeting of Castlecliff Townswomen’s Guild was held in the church hall, Heads Road, on Tuesday, when Mrs. Rountree presided. Apologies were received from Mesdames Sanson, Hardaker, Bekker and Harris. One new member was enrolled. Minutes of the last annual report were read and confirmed. Several letters were read from soldiers overseas thanking the guild for parcels. The annual report and balancesheet were presented. Miss Cole, who attended as scrutineer for the election of a new committee, congratulated the guild on its work during -the year. She was presented witn a oouquei of gladioli by Mrs. Rountree. We were pleased to welcome Mrs. C. Wagstaff and Mrs. McElwain as our guests for the afternoon and they received a bouquet of gladioli each. Mrs. Norman and Mrs. Pengelly sang two duets. Members presented the sketch “A Tea Party” by request and Mis. Norman read an article on the discovery of insulin, which proved very interesting. Kitchen hints were given by members, this one deserving mention; To prevent curly leaf in apricot, peach and nectarine trees sprinkle epsom salts round the roots and water it in.

A bouquet of gladioli was sent to Mrs. Gaskin, retiring treasurer, who was ill and unable to attend.

Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses.
