NEW PATRIOTIC APPEAL

SUPPORT BY POWER BOARD On the motion of the chairman, Mr. F. Purnell (Marton), the Wan-ganui-Rangitikei Power Board, at its monthly meeting yesterday, granted £5OO toward the current patriotic appeal. Mr. Purnell said the last year the board contributed £5OO toward the patriotic fund, the amount being allocated to different districts in the board’s area according to the volume of business. Of this amount Wanganui received about £3OO. “I suggest that we agree to giving £5OO on the same basis as last year,” the chairman added. “It is our duty to do anything we can to help patriotic funds.” Mr. S. J. Harris said he did not agree that the board should make the grant. He hesitated to brim; this point forward, in case he w® understood, but he was of the opinion that every individual had an opportunity of contributing his quota toward the fund. By giving £5OO of community money the board was forcing people to contribute. “This seems a fair way of giving mopey to patriotic funds,” said Mr W. Morrison (Maxwell). “When you ask people to give to this sort of thing it is usually the same people who put their hands in their pockets all the time. By putting it over the whole community everybody pays a proportion.”

Special provision was made for local bodies to make contributions to patriotic funds, said Mr. Purnell. “Our £5OO is quite small compared with what some other bodies in New Zealand are doinr but it is an encouragement to those people who are giving year in and year out.”
