KEEN INTEREST IN ART
STATE ASKED TO ASSIST (Special). Wellington, March 8. An appeal to the Government to encourage the interest people were now taking in art. was made by 2nd-Lieut. J. B. Cotterill, M.P. for Wanganui, when sneaking in the Addross-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives to-day. “Many people find in these days of war that they are unable to pursue their pre-war forms of relaxation* said Lieut. Cotterill. “These people are taking up art. and a recent exhibition of the work of local artists, held in Wanganui, demonstrated the interest shown and the wonderful progress made in recent years in the cultural life of the community.” Second-Lieut. Cotterill added that there was an acute shortage of painters’ materials in New Zealand, and while realising the difficulty of obtaining these supplies from Great Britain, he hoped the Government would explore every possible avenue of obtaining the materials required by neonlo interested in art. He thought that ; £5OOO to £lO.OOO would cover the cost | of the Dominion’s present requirements. “The cultural value of this new stimulus to art is very great and ■should ho given every encouragement and assistance,” he added - -
