HOSPITAL FOR DOGS
NOT CONTEMPLATED BY S.P.C.A.
The society had no intention of establishing a dog hospital in Lifliton Street, said the secretary of the Wanganui branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Mr. A. R. Donaldson, commenting on a recent petition to the City Council. The petition, which was signed by a number of residents in the locality, protested against the establishment of a hospital for animals in a residential area.
Apparently this impression had gone abroad after publicity was given to the gift of a section of land to the society by Mrs. Waters, of Wellington, Mr. Donaldson added. He emphasised, however, that the society had no inteniion of treating diseased animals on the section. “It is the intention of the S.P.C.A. to establish kennels on the section for the care of animals whose owners are on holiday. These kennels will be built under the supervision of a Wanganui architect, and the fullest consideration will be given to sanitary arrangements. It is not thought that at any one time more than half a dozen animals will be accommodated, but k is possible that during a year anything up to 100 dogs may be housed at the kennels,” said Mr. Donaldson.
“A permit will have to be obtained before any building can be done on the section, end for this reason building is temporarily held up. and until the S.P.C.A. is assured that the materials will be available nothing can be done. Full plans of the proposed building, when the permit has been secured, will bp submitted to the Wanganui City Council for approval.”
