AT CROSSROADS
ALLIES IN PACIFIC CAMPAIGN NIMITZ ON~GUADALCANAR SUCCESS (Recd. 6.30 p.m.) Rugby, Feb. 28. “We are now at the crossroads in the Pacific campaign,” declared Admiral Nimitz, broadcasting to-night from somewhere in the Pacific. Admiral Nimitz added that, through the unmatched devotion of the men who held the lines in the trying months of the past year, we nave turned back the enemy in the South Pacific. The loss of Guadalcanar marked the first defeat of that kind suffered by the Japanese in modern times. From now on the going would be tougher as we undertook tne task of driving the enemy from prepared positions he had been building in conquered areas. It was our job to destroy ships and planes and neutralise his island strongpoints as we drive towards positions whence we can reach with our shells and bomb his industrial nerve centres.—B.O.W.
