PHONEY FAST”

COMMENT ON GANDHI (Reed. 7.15 p.m.) London. Feb. 28. The Daily Telegraph’s Poona corre spondent says that Gandhi’s self-im-posed fast, due to end on Wednesday, was virtually broken on February 23. Gandhi for the previous thirteen days had taken only two ounces ol limejuice mixed with water daily. Doctors on February 23 advised that he had reached the limit of hik fasting capacity. Gandhi in the next ?4 hours took 20 ounces of sweetened lime and orange juice and also was medically treated. Congress opponents’ allegation that it was a "phoney fast” is probably not justified, but the fast differed from the previous ones, when Gandhi took only salts dissolved in water. He improved on February 23, after which he reverted to two ounces of limejuice in water.
