RATS AND DISEASE

Sir,—Obviously not only Wanganui, will be indebted to you if your timely editorial of last Friday rouses public opinion to make a lead in a crusade against rats as disease-carriers. The question is, who is to do it, and how? I would suggest the Bov Scouts as an organisation take it in hand, and all private citizens back them up energetically in every available way, with traps, poison (when able to get any), cats and dogs. If ferrets are obtainable it* would be worth while to seek a few individuals, experienced in handling them, to make the round of the district, paying according to results. It may be relevant to ask who. or what, is responsible for conditions in such fertile breeding nlaces as Virginia Lake Gardens and the river bank between the brewery and Dublin Street Bridge? Can an organisation, such as the Bov Scouts, or an individual, such as a ferreter engaged for the job. get at it without breaking any civic rules? As you say. why not wait on the Government? Surely this is a situation In which to recognise the truth of “The Lord helps those who help themselves,” now—l am. etc.. KATHERINE MERCER.
