JAP OFFENSIVE
RESUMEDJN CHINA AIM TO END RESISTANCE
(By Telegraph—Prese Association—Copyright) (Recd. 7.15 p.m.) Chungking, Feb. 18. The Japanese have begun attacks in seven widely-separated areas from the lake country northward of Shanghai to the jungles of Yunnan, apparently hoping to end Chinese resistance, says the Associated Press correspondent. Not since May, when the Japanese simultaneously pushed up the Burma Road with a twin-headed drive to the Kiangsi and Chekiang provinces and made several lodgments on the Fukien coast, have the Japanese shown such great co-ordinated activity. A Chinese spokesman said:—“As yet there is not an indication that the current operations are a prelude to a general offensive. Probably they are motivated by a desire to dissipate Chinese strength.” The latest Chungking communique stales that the Japanese, after bringing up 10,000 reinforcements from Lashio, began an offensive in the south-western Yunnan, where they made some gains. Heavy lighting is continuing.
