SUPPLIES FOR MALTA

BIG CONVOY GETS THROUGH London, Fob.. 17. Thousands of tons of food, ammunition, petrol, and other stores have reached Malta safely in one of the largest convoys ever sent to the island during the war. To celebrate this, Malta’s dockers set up a new, record. While Spitfires circled overhead and troops manned anti-aircraft guns, the dockers worked day and night for nearly a week. In contrast to this, more ships loaded with Axis war material bound for North Africa failed to get through. Thev were sent lo the bottom of the Mediterranean. British submarines accounted for at least six ships for certain, while another vessel was probably sunk and another damaged. The supply ships had a triple escort of destroyers, motor-launches and aircraft.
