MARTON NOTES

UNITED SERVICES' CLUB EQUIPMENT AT ROOMS Mrs. G. B. Gregory presided at a meeting of the Marton United Services' Club committee. The meeting was an open one, all helpers having been invited, and in spite of very wet weather there was a good attendance. Reports showed that equipment at the club rooms is still being added to, and every effort is being made for the comfort and entertainment of visitors. Mrs. Knox has lent her piano to the club, and with the help of Mr. Lilly has been installed and returned. Loans of song books and other suitable music would be welcomed by the committee. The ping-pong table is proving very popular, although the balls are suffering from much use. Gifts of spare balls would be very acceptable, as they are unprocurable in the shops. Another big improvement has been the acquisition of a gas caliphont. which, through the kind offices of the Marton Borough Council, is In use in the bathroom. AIR FORCE PATRIOTIC CONCERT Great interest is being taken in the patriotic concert to be staged at the Civic Theatre on Wednesday next by an Air Force concert party of 25 members. Canvassers from the Patriotic Committee report a ready sale of tickets, and on Friday evening a good sale of tickets was reported by canvassers in Broadway. A.N.A. MARTON HELPERS

Music lovers, regardless of their tastes, have a treat in store for them at the Civic Theatre, where “The Chocolate Soldier,” Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s new musical comedy, starring Nelson Eddy and Rise Stevens, opens to-day. A brilliant production, musically and dramatically it serves as an excellent vehicle with which to introduce Miss Stevens, Hollywood’s newest singing star, who comes to the screen from the Metropolitan opera. The story revolves about a married couple who are the musical comedy toasts of Vienna. The success they enjoy on the stage is, unfortunately, not repeated in their marital life, for Miss Stevens, cast as Maria, is a flirtatious wench, and Eddy, as Karl, is a husband consumed by jealousy. It is not until Karl hits upon the resource of masquerading as his own rival that he is able to test his wife's faithfulness, a test which is obviously fraught with hilarious complications.
