FRUIT AND VEGETABLE MARKET APPLE PRICES REMAIN UNCHANGED. The Government fixed wholesale price for apples remains unchanged at 13s 6d per bushel, and 6d per lb. retail. Cookers are also priced at 13s 6d per case, and 6d per lb. retail. Supplies of dessert sorts are hardly sufficient for the demand, but cookers are plentiful. Pears are in short supply, and the small lots available Lave to be rationed at the fixed wholesale price of 7s 6d per half-case. Louis Bon Jersey are the variety on the Wanganui market. Tomatoes are plentiful, but the market has a firm tone for fruit of good quality. Raspberries are finished for the season. Stone fruit has been in short supply during the week and there was a firm enquiry for all lines at a firmer tone. Jam plums have been offering at good rates, but dessert have been in short supply. The apricot season is about finished, and the small lots available are being rationed to retailers in single-case lots at the fixed ceiling, a maximum price of 9s 6d per case for best quality. Peaches are selling wholesale at 15s to 21s. Choice Million Dollar peaches are being retailed up to 9d each. A case of these, containing 48, was sold this week for 345. Nectarines are practically finished for the season, but what fruit are available are selling at from 12s to 14s a case. Heavy supplies of cucumbers have been received at the marts this week and have brought very poor prices. Lettuce have been in normal supply, good quality bringing from 5s to 6s 6? per case. Poor qualities were quitted at very low prices. Good cabbages were in keen demand during the week, but cauliflowers have not made their appearance yet, supplies being expected in the next two weeks. Choice quality greer. peas have a ready sale. Inferior and dry qualityare difficult to place. Swedes and marrows are in heavy supply, also new season’s onions. Wholesale prices are a follow: Apple: New season’s desserts and cookers, 13s 6d per bushel case. Tomatoes: Outdoor, 3s to 4s per case; hothouse, 5d to 6d per lb. Oranges: Unobtainable except for hospital use. Peaches: 15s to 21s case. Apricots: When available, 9s 3d per case. Plums: Jam, 12s 6d per case. Nectarines: 12s to 14s case, when available. Pears: 7s 6d per half-case. Cucumbers: 9d to Is 6d a dozen. Green Peas: 5d to 6d per lb. Cabbage: 5s to 8s per sack. Lettuce: 5s to 6s 6d case; poor quality. Is a case. Onion«: 8s a sugar bag.
