T.B. IN DOMINION

CONTINUOUS WORK NEEDED TO REDUCE PROBLEM (P.A.) Wellington, Feb. 19. “The position does not give cause for alarm, but definitely shows the need of steady and continuous work to reduce this really grave problem,” said Dr. Hubert Smith, medical officer of health in Wellington, commenting on the Dominion figures that 271 new cases of tuberculosis had been notified so far this year, with 83 deaths. “These figures w r ere about what the department had been getting since the notification of all forms of tuberculosis were instituted about 18 months ago. "Tuberculosis represented the largest proportion of notifiable diseases. Early detection of cases and prompt treatment were most important in helping to check tuberculosis, which was far the worst of notifiable diseases in New Zealand at present,” he commented.
