GRIM BATTLE SOUTH-EAST OF LAKE ILMEN

London, Feb. 16. An announcement to-night by the German High Command summarising the events along the whole front, asserted that large Russian forces of tanks and aircraft attacked south-east of Lake Ilmen, between Leningrad and Moscow. "A grim battle has heen waged knee-deep in water,” it said. “The Russians made ’ocal breaches which have been sealed off.” A Finnish communique claims that the Finns repulsed Russian motorised sledge formations which were attempting to attack an occupied island in Lake Onega.
