DAYLIGHT RAID
BASE AT ST. NAZAIRE FLIGHT BY FORTRESSES
(By Telegraph—PreseAssociation—Copyright; (Recd. 7 p.m.) London, Feb. 16. American Flying Fortresses and Liberators carried out a daylight raid Oti the U-boat base at St. Nazaire. The weather was clear, and the bombs burst amid the vital area where submarines are repaired and refuelled. Fires were left blazing in the target area. After the raid swarms of enemy fighters came up to avenge the raid they had not been quick enough to stop. There were many dog-fights over hundreds of miles of French territory and until our planes reached the Channel.
St. Nazaire is beyond the range of British fighter squadrons, but they supported the bombers to the limit of their range. Six bombers are missing.
