LOSING THE WAR
CHILEAN’S OPINION OF GERMANY ITALIANS DESIRE PEACE -BUT SUPPRESSED Santiago, Feb. 2. “Germany is losing the war,” declared Colonel Osvaldo Valencia, former Chilean military attache to Italy and Germany, who returned to Chile last week. He said a European second front was necessary to defeat Germany and expressed the opinion that it would be opened soon. He added: “The German general staff is disagreeing with Hitler. The German offensive reached its maximum intensity on the Russian front, but Was unable to overcome the Russian resistance. German morale has suffered severe blows, but the Ger-
man Army is not yet defeated, and Germany is believed to be preparing a third plan of attack against Russia. The Luftwaffe has lost its superiority and is now either equal or inferior to the R.A.F., which has caused terrific destruction in Germany. “The Italians are opposed to Fascism and want peace. I predict an Italian revolution against Fascism, British bombings have ruined great areas of Milan and Genoa. The Italian Navy now has only three capital ships, and Allied freighters are passing through the Straits of Sicily witnout interference from that navy. “Germany has sent 300,000 troops and 30,000 police to keep Italy in tne war, and tne Italians are suffering under their oppression.”
