LIVESTOCK FIGURES

GRAVE DECLINE IN ENEMYOCCUPIED COUNTRIES (Recd. 6 p.m.) Rugby, Jan. 27. The estimated decline of livestock in enemy occupied Allied countries as a result, of a lack of feeding stuffs, requisitioning and slaughter is in the region of 1,000,000 head of cattle, 3,000,000 horses, 12,009,000 pigs and 11,000,000 sheep, according to figures revealed in a report, prepared by Allied agricultural experts. The report draws attention to the fact that the decline constitutes a serious menace both to post-war food supplies and to future European agriculture. Milking production has gone down more than a third, meat production by nearly one-half and the reduction in breeding animals is such that a recovery to pre-war numbers will take many years, and a lack of draught animals may be a serious hindrance to cultivation for the first post-war harvest. —8.0.W.
