SCHOOL UNIFORMS

MINISTER’S STATEMENT (P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 27. The Minister of Education, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, stated to-day that many schools had already relaxed rules regarding wearing school uniforms. It was realised that* in normal times the wearing of school uniforms had many advantages, but a considerable demand was now being made on the clothing industry by the armed forces, and the Government wished to reduce as much as possible? the civilian demand for special shades and materials. The Minister stated that therefore he was asking the principals of postprimary schools to relax the usual rules regarding the wearing of school uniforms and not to insist on the wearing of school uniforms in any case which involved hardship to parents or waste of clothing materials.
