ASSISTANT MASTERS

ACCOMMODATION PROBLEM LACK IN COUNTRY DISTRICTS The Wanganui Education Board at its monthly meeting on Tuesday had two requests from school committees regarding accommodation for assistant schoolmasters The first was from Ohakune, which sought the board’s support in the purchase of two residences. The second was from the Raurimu, which asked the board’s support in an application to the Minister of Education, Hon. H. G. R. Mason, for the building of a residence for an assistant master. “If the Education Department were to build houses for assistant masters it would be inundated with applications from all over the Dominion,’’ said the chairman, Mr. E. F. Hemingway. “If we support these applications they will be refused because it is asking for something that is unreasonable,’’ he added. “All we can do is to notify the committees concerned that the matter is one for the Housing Department to meet.’’ Mr. W. P. Meades (Raetihi) said the accommodation at Raurimu for teachers was primitive. He thought the Housing Department should be approached regarding the matter. It was decided to draw the attention of th° Hon. H G. R. Mason. Minister for Education, to the dearth of accommodation for teachers in some districts, requesting that he take the matter up with the Housing Department.
