In an inn in the provinces a resident, questioned by a stranger concerning the town, was finally asked: “And who, in your opinion, is your town's most worthy citizen?” “Well,'' said the resident, “if you don't mind. I’d rather you asked that question of someone else. I never was much of a man for talking about myself!” Washington Irvine knew a man of similar “make-up.” He was an American diplomatist of some fame and great pomposity. When his name was mentioned in Irvine’s presence, h” said: "Ah, he is a great man; in his own intimation, a very great man a man of great weight. When he goes to the west the east tips up!”
