BOOKMAKING CHARGES

MAORI FINED AT WAITARA (P.A.) New Plymouth, Jan. 27. “Some of the bets accepted by you were from Maoris, and that is particularly serious because it’s encouraging betting among members of your own race,” said Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., to Richard Potaka, farmer and freezing works employee, who appeared in the Waitara Court to-day and was fined £5O for conducting the business of a bookmaker. James Albert Goodwin, tailor, and Kenneth O’Donnell, hairdresser and tobacconist, were each fined £25 for allowing their premises to be used as common gaming houses.
