RAETIHI NEWS

VISIT OF DIR. LANGSTONE. (0.C.) Raetihi, Jan. 27. There was a good attendance at a meeting addressed by the Hon. Mr. Langstone at the Drill Hall, Raetihi, on Wednesday evening, Mr. A. Ashmore presiding. Mr. Langstone spoke of his experiences in America and Canada, remarking on the great contribution which America was making to the war effort. He stated that he had been privileged to visit factories and shipyards and had seen for himself how the Americans worked. There was complete unity in the purpose of winning the war. He noted the great change* of the American people after the Pearl Harbour episode and their determination to see this war through to the end. On his arrival in Canada he saw the same spirit there, the springing up of factories everywhere, thousands of women working at the machines Everywhere he went he found that the Canadians had the greatest regard for our boys who were training in the Air Force scheme. He also spoke of the financial help Canada had given to Britain. Dealing with his political career he declared that he had always stood firm with the Labour policy of 1935 and had never had any desire for Cabinet rank He was greatly indebted to Waimarino electors for what they had done fur him and it was never his intention to resign the seat. He resigned a good and easy job which meant £4OOO a year as High Commissioner in Canada. He stood not for monetary gain but for principles. The Prime Minister understood what he stood for and for that reason had denied him the position in Washington which he had been promised. He hated to be double-crossed by a colleague. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks and confidence in the speaker and this was carried unanimously.
