WAR-TIME IMMORALITY
ALARM IN AUSTRALIA. (Air Mail.) Sidney, Jan. 19. The growth of war-time immorality among young Australian girls is perturbing responsible sections of the community, especially in view of the increase of venereal disease disclosed by health authorities. The Rederal and State Governments, however, are making little effort to arrest tfie evil, and with the churches are shunning the responsibility. Although officers of the Health Department favour a carefully-prepared publicity campaign on social diseases, some churchmen and members of Parliament oppose such a revolutionary social measure, preferring to shut their eyes to what is going on. The extent of the degradation was revealed when police swore an information against the occupier of a Sydney building, the Ritz Private Hotel. Acting on the information in the affidavit, the chief stipendiary magistral?. Mr. D. W. Reed, declared the premises a disorderly house, under National Security Regulations. The affidavit alleged that young girls and Allied soldiers indulged in drunken orgies at the Ritz. The occupier of the Rilz Hotel, James Alfred Parker, refused to make a statement after the declaration had been signed.
