TEA AND SUGAR
IMPORTS THIS YEAR MORE LIQUOR STOCKS ARRIVE For the first 10 months of this year, a greatly increased quantity ot tea was imported to New Zealand. The sugar Importations declined slightly. The tea imports, according to the Abstracts of Statistics, were 15,610,0131 b., valued at 11,974,426, while for January-October, 1941, they were 10,710,023 valued at 11,162,313. The quantity of tea imported in October was 1,193,0751 b. of a value of £133,202. Sugar importations for the 10 months were 1,170,616 cwt., valued at £976,141, against 1,202,893 cwt. (£883,3591 in 1941. October importations were 50,557 cwt. Sugar used in the biscuit and confectionery making industry during 1941-42 amounted to 9889 tons, costing £298.916. Sugar used advanced by 10 per cent, in quantity and 12 per cent, in cost.
Liquor importations in October were substantially greater than in October, 1941. Whisky imports were 17,181 gallons (£29,322), but for the 10 months they were only 85,565 gallons (£142,781), against 149,630 gallons (£216.209) in 1941. Brandy imports for October were 1326 gallons (£1736), and for the 10 months they were 32.382 gallons (£30.295). Gin imports for October were 6197 gallons (£7175) and for January-October 39,875 gallons (£44,575), against 40,252 gallons (£42,073) last year. Rum imports for the 10 months totalled 32,761 gallons (£15.592), compared with 17,691 gallons (£7670) last year.
