JAP DESTROYERS
HEAVILY DAMAGED BY U.S. PLANES Rugby, Jan. 3. An American air raid on Japanese naval units is a feature of a United States Navy Department communique. It stated: “At 8.20 a.m. on Saturday Marauder medium and Dauntless dive-bombers, escorted by Wildcat, Airacobra, and Warhawk fighters, bombed the Japanese airfield in Munda (New Georgia). Hits were scored on emplacements and other installations. “At 2.46 p.m. four Fortresses escorted by Lightnings bombed a formation Of enemy destroyers 30 miles south ot Shortland Island. Not hits were observed.
“At 6 p.m. Dauntless dive-bombers escorted by Wildcats and Lightnings attacked Japanese destroyers seven miles north-west of Orendoha -Island (New Georgia). The destroyers were protected by ten fighters and one dive-bomber. One destroyer was left burning badly and another appeared to be sinking.” The communique adds that there was patrol activity on Guadalcanal-, and Munda airport was again attacked by American planes yesterday.
