COMPELLED TO RETREAT
JAP FORCES INLAND FROM SWATOW (Recd. 7.5 p.m.) Chungking, Jan. 2. Japanese troops who landed under cover of a naval barrage from numerous warships north-east of Swatow and drove inland to Takang have been forced to retreat, states a Chinese communique. Chinese forces are now mopping up the remnants of the enemy.
The Chinese recaptured Tsienshin and Taihu, in south-western Anhwei, forcing the Japanese to retreat towards Susang. on the Yangtse River.
