HITHER AND THITHER

Colours on Hie Beach. Fashions come and go in beach wear—not that there is anything new to be seen in these days of war and rationing of clothes. Probably because of the sameness of style, or perhaps utility had something to do with it, a few young men appeared in strange but colourful garb on Castlecliff Beach on New Year's Day. They wore long bright patterned skirts over their swimming shorts. One tall thin youth had on a tartan patterned shirt in snappy hues, and to enhance the colourful effect, the shirt was worn straight down over the shorts instead of being tucked in them. Jerseys patterned m bright circular stripes "a la apache” were popular with the young men. A few entrancing play suits in pretty shades and one or two of the new bathing suits with the longer and fuller leg effect gathered into the pointed waistline looked most attractive on a number of the feminine sex on the beach. Large tie-on bonnets, which will open out flat for laundering, and have protecting brims, were the favourite headgear. Sutcliffe School of Radiant Living. Miss Stella Ashmore, vice-presiaent, presided over the general meeting 01 the Sutcliffe School of Radiant Living □n December 29. Mrs. Sutherland was m charge of the community singing. Mrs. Beal conducted the allirmation "My Purpose,” while Miss Ruth Cowan read the founder's weekly message. Mrs. Myrtle Garrett, who gave a very interesting lecture on "Enthusiasm,” said that this is the emotion which carries us to success, ror failure is due to lack of enthusiasm, ft is not enough to do our work as a duty only, but when done with enthusiasm it is a joy. Build an image of your desires, follow it with enthusiasm and you will surely reach your goal. Miss Stella Ashmore gave a New Year message, "The Old Order Changes,” making an appeal to her audience to do tneir part to build a new order. All change, whether to a higher or lower level, comes througn the individual so eacn one has a responsibility in making the coming year a better one for the whole world. Set yourself a standard to live up to, and there is no higher one than the life of Christ. Follow His command, "Love ye one another as i have loved you,” and you will be doing your part to bring in the New Christian Order. Honour for Nurse.

Miss Smidt was born in Palmerston North and received her nursing training at the Palmerston North Hospital alter which she took private patients and later nursed in Sydney, whence she returned to New Zealand at the outbreak of war for the purpose ot joining the Army Nursing Service.
