CONGO SPITFIRE

MAIDEN FLIGHT SUCCESS. A Spitfire presented by the Belgian Congo to the R.A.F., carrying a Belgian name and flown by a Belgian pilot, shot down a F.W.190 on its maiden flight, 'ine pilot was decorated with the Belgian Croix de Guerre the other day. People of the Belgian Congo, still actively waging the fight against the oppressors of their fatherland, have already subscribed toward 50 Spitfires, the 50th being named “Forancqui” after a famous pioneer of the Belgian Congo. It has been requested that each of the aircraft shall be flown by a Belgian pilot flying in the R.A.F. The latest success took place over St. Omer. “I was flying with my British squadron,” the Belgian pilot said afterwards, “when I saw the F.W.190 4000 ft. below at 10,000. I dived down, set him on fire with a short burst, and watched him go down. After that I was greedy and waited for about 15 minutes, but no more of the enemy came, so I went back.”
