CHASE OF ROMMEL ALLIED PATROLS CONTACT AXiS FORCES (Reed. 9.35 p.in.) London, Dec. 31. Eighth Army advanced units are skirmishing with Rommel’s rearguard over the rocky terrain between Sirte and Misurata. The Wadi Sofezzin, 40 miles west of Wadi Zemzem, is the only remaining defence point between Wadi Zenizer.i and Misurata. Reuter’s Cairo correspondent says patrols pushing westwards and parallel with the Sirte Road reached the Belezziden waterhole, 40 to 50 miles south-westwards of Sirte and 20 miles southward of Buerat.
The Associated Press correspondent at Allied Headquarters in North Africa says new activity is reported in the area of Bouarada station, 20 miles southward of Medjez el Bab, 15 miles westward of Pont du Fahs,
where Allied patrols contacted Axis forces. Enemy armoured units shell* ed the road six miles northward of Bouarada.
French and British troops captured an unspecified position norih-west-ward of Haidous, in a fresh lound of sparring for important hill strongholds in the arc around Medjez el Bab. Some of these strongholds dominate the path north-east to Terburba
