POLICE AND SERVICEMEN Wellington, Dec. 31. The large number ot people gathered at the railway station last evening had more than the departure of the Auckland express to interest them. An unscheduled item was a violent struggle in which two constables, a sailor, and a soldier were involved, with luggage hurled into the crowd and a pair of handcuffs as sidelights. In the Magistrate's Court to-day, Clive George Davis, a sailor, aged 18, pleaded guilty to being drunk, using obscene language, and resisting arrest. He was convicted and discharged on the first charge, fined £2 on the second, and £3 on the third. Thomas Henry Dunn, soldier, aged 21, was fined £3 for obstructing the police. Senior-Sergeant T. Campag»>lo •aid Davis was seen with a bottle of beer, and the police told him he could not travel with it. He became very excited and used obscene language. The constables tried to persuade him to stop swearing and go along quietly, but he continued to use the language all the time. He made a dart for the gates and threw his luggage at them, but the luggage missed and hit several people. He became very violent and had to be handcuffed. For a time the position looked very ugly. Davis <to Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M.I: The handcuffs were hurting me. It was the last day of my leave and I wanted to make the most 'of it, because I mightn’t get any for some time.
Senior-Sergeant Campagnolo said Dunn arrived during the struggle and tried to get Davis away from the nolice. He knocked a constable’s helmet off and obstructed him considerably. He was carrying a rubberised btaon and swinging it about. Dunn’s excuse was that he had been drinking in the afternoon.
