An appeal to the United Nations to open the gates of their countries and save at least the children “from mass poisoning and burial alive by Hitler and his hellhounds,” was made by the Chief Rabbi, Dr. Hertz, preaching on the e occasion of the Jewish day of n mourning. 11 He added: “We are filled with horI ror at the deliberate killing of mil- £ lions of defenceless men, women and children. JEWISH SYMPATHY FOR THE PERSECUTED London, Dec. 13. Jews throughout Britain will fast to-day for the persecuted Jews in Poland. Synagogues are holding special services. Jewish traders in Petticoat Lane will cease business for five minutes’ silence. The executive members of the International Federation of Trades Unions, at present in London, adopted a resolution protesting against the German extermination of the Jews and demanding punishment for the criminals. The resolution added: “The federation has so far refused to believe that German trade unionists have tolerated this savagery, but as there is no sign of German workers actively resisting, it will be impossible to acquit them of responsibility for these horrors.” The Free Austria movement in London declared that liberated Aus- ’ tria would not leave unavenged a single Jewish life destroyed in cold ‘ blood. No person sharing in the slaughter in any capacity would escape punishment.
