PICNIC AT PATEA
BOXING DAY SPORTS ’ (0.C.) Patea, Dec. 14. ; It was decided by the Patea Aih- j ' letic Club at its annual meeting that ■ the annual picnic sports to be held in the Domain on Boxing Day, the ! matter of the programme be left > secretary, and Messrs. Stretton, : Maule and Gardiner. Mr. E. F. Hem- ! ingway presided. ; The balance-sheet showed a ; credit balance of £25 6s 4d of assets ; over liabilities. Locker. ; Mr. Broker reported that he had 1 received an offer of a silver cup for ; the club from Mr. W. F. Johnson. The offer was accepted and it was ■ decided to call it the Johnson Cup. : The meeting placed on record its appreciation of the work of Mr. Broker, without whose help the club would have had to go into recess. Votes of thanks were accorded the auditor, Mr. B. O. Gamby, and all who had helped to make the club's operations a success. PATEA BREAKING-UP CEREMONY The Patea School annual break- : ing-up ceremony was held on Friday, the Rev. Walton E. F. Farr, and Mr. W. Henderson being present, together with Mr. E. F. Hemingway, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board. Proceedings opened with the National Anthem and at the close the ; j American National Anthem was sung h by the pupils. Prayers were read I j during a devotional service by Mr. I - Walton. Mr. Henderson read the j Lesson and Mr. Farr gave the ad- , dress. c Christmas hymns were sung by the < children and several items were ( given, including a percussion band of j 37 instruments. Recitations were .• given by Mavis Morgan and Terry ( Corbett, also choral speaking items, £ and Mr. Farr gave several recita- x tions. | Mr. Stretton, headmaster, ex- p pressed regret at the fact that the r present function would probably be v the last attended by Mr. Farr, who 0 was to enter camp as a chaplain \ shortly. £ Mr. Hemingway also thanked the i ministers for attending and giving / religious instruction to the children, t A collection was taken for the bene- a lit of the Wanganui Crippled Chil- 3 dren Fund. t .. . r
