KING’S BIRTHDAY
FORTY-SEVEN YESTERDAY King George VI celebrated his 47th birthday yesterday. He was born on December 14. 1895, at Sandringham, and was trained for the Navy. He was present at the Battle oi Jutland in 1916. He became a captain in the Royal Air Force in 1919. On April 26. 1923, he married Elizabeth BowesLyon, daughter of the Earl and Countes of Strathmore. In 1927. as th ■ Duke and Duchess of York, they toured Australia and New Zealand. In December, 1936, the Duke ascended the Throne on the abdication of King Edward VIII. King George was crowned in Westminster Abbey on May 12, 1937. Because of the close proximity to the Christmas period, the birthday is not celebrated as a holiday in New Zealand, but the first Monday in June is set aside. In acknowledgment of the King's birthday flags were flying from Government buildings yesterday.
