SPRING CARROTS
WHOLESALE PRICE BEING ENFORCED. Becr/ise the Price Investigation Tribunal is now enforcing the wholesale price of £24 a ton for spring carrots, Chinese growers have reiused to market their crops till January, when the carrots will be more mature, states a report from Christchurch. No carrots were offered fo sale in any of the city fruit and vegetable markets on Saturday. The growers contend that to sell their produce for £24 a ton is uneconomic and below the cost of production, and have refused to market any carrots till January, unless some adjustment is made to the price order. The price of £24 a ton is equivalent to Is or less a dozen bunches, whereas the price during the past 30 years has been 2s and 4s a dozen bunches, said a city auctioneer. He added that the public were willing to pay up to 9cl a bunch for spring carrots, but the price order limited the retail price to 4d a a pound. Supplies of last season’s carrots were still available at only £5 a ton. but these were selling very slowly because spring carrots were selling so cheaply. A similar position exists with respect to turnips.
