BRUTAL ASSAULT ON CONSTABLE
MACRIS AT NUHAKA (P.A.) Wairoa, Dec. 14 Describing the incident as a brutal assault or a police constable, ihe presiding justices this morning sentenced two Maoris Stanley Smith to six weeks and Hawera Meihana to two months in the Napier gaol. On Saturday nighl Constable Houston found accused in the vicinity ot a dance hall at Nuhaka in possession of a ke.g of beer. When taking the liquor to his car Constable Houston was struck by a bottle on a shoulder and, flashing his torch, saw Meihana in a ditch by the roadside. Meihana then commenced throwing more hotties, one of which struck Constable Houston the head, inflicting injuries. Constable Houston then drew a baton, disabling one Maori whilst others made off. It was stated in evidence that stirruo irons anH leathers were also used in the attack and a store nearby had been depleted of empty bottles.
