ROWING ON THE NILE
WANGANUI MAN’S SUCCESS A former Wanganui man, Private Pl. L. Nixon, serving with the 2nd N.Z.E.F. overseas, was a member of a four-oar rowing crew which competed successfully in two races at regattas held on the Nile against Egyptian rowing clubs. In one event, the Novice Fours, the New Zealand crew, which included Private Nixon, had an easy win against six other crews, the final margin being six lengths. The race was for the Mustapha Metwalli Cup, over a distance of two miles. After I the race Private Nixon, and other ; members of the crew, were presented | with prizes 'by Lady Freyberg, wife ; of the officer commanding the New ; Zealanders in the Middle East, Lieu-tenant-General Sir Bernard C. Frey- ' berg, V.C. i At this regatta it was also announced that Lieutenant - Colonel Freyberg had given a silver cup for competition between the Cairo River ! Club and Mandi Camp. I Private Nixon also figured in the four-oar event on.the day of the first competition for Lieutenant-General Freyberg’s new trophy. New Zealanders on this occasion won all but the eight-oared event, and the final points were: Maadi (Second N.Z.E.F.) 20. Cairo Rowing Club 16. The Freyberg Cup was presented to i the New Zealanders and medals were I presented to the members of the crews. Private Nixon is a son of Mr. and | Mrs. N. Nixon. Bell Street, Wanga- , nui, and before going overseas was ■ prominent in swimming circles in , Wanganui, being a member of the Central and Wanganui Last Clubs.
