R.A.F. RAIDS
DAMAGE IN GERMANY HOPELESS DEVASTATION AT HAMBURG (Ry Telejrrnph—Presi Association—Copyright) (Recd. 9.5 p.m.) London, Sept. 29. Evidence is accumulating of the extent of the damage and demoralisation caused by R.A.F. raids on Munich, Bremen and Oslo in the last ten days, says the Daily Telegraph’s Zurich correspondent. Newspaper announcements indicate that at least 200 were killed in the Munich raid on the night of September 26. R.A.F. cannon-fire on the night of September 19 wrecked the Munich-Berlin express and killed from 50 to 60 passengers, mostly officers returning from Italy and North Africa. Bremen is reported to be “a scene of hopeless devastation. Vast residential areas have completely vanished and the inner town is a heap of ruins.” It is reported that 30 per cent, of Bremen’s population are sheltering in buildings unfit for habitation. Over 200.000 Hamburg residents lack suitable winter quarters. A report received in Zurich from Berlin says that over 100 holiday resorts in Germany have been closed because the authorities confiscated hotels and lodging-houses to accommodate German wounded.
