Or. T. Maling. assistant medical superintendent of the Christchurch Hospital, has accepted an appointin', m on the stall o£ the Pukeroa Sanatorium. Mr P J Byrne has been appointed secretary of 'the North Canterbury Racing Club in succession to Mr. L,. w. Harley, who recently retired after a long period of service. Mr. Eddie Martin, who recently produced the successful revues “Thumbs Up” and "Navy Knights” for the Wanganui Savage Club, left yesterday for New Plymouth ano Hawera. After producing revues m those centres he will return to Wanganui to produce and stage an elaborate pantomime in aid of the Crippled Children's Society. Mr. Levi Smith, a well-known Wellington publican, died on Saturday last. He was licensee of the Terminus Hotel for some years, and later took over a lease of the Gresham Hotel, on Lambton Quay. Before his residence in Wellington, Mr. Smith was equally well-known in Auckland, where he had many friends among the theatrical profession. Mr. Charles E. Borne, whose death occurred at Invercargill last week, was one of the best Known members of the accountancy profession in Southland and Otago. He was 72 years of age. He was associated with lodge activities in Southland for many years and was secretary of the Shamrock, Rose and Thistle Lodge, Manchester Unity, and provincial secretary of the Manchester Unity of the Southland district. The death occurred on of one of the oldest residents in Kaiwarra, Mr. William Holmes, who arrived in Kaiwarra with his parents when six months old, and had lived there ever since. For many years he was concerned in the tannery of Hirst and Company, which existed in Kaiwarra for over 50 years, his father having been one of the principals othat firm. Later deceased and a partner acquired the tannery. Mr. Holmes was a pillar of the Methodist Church and a great worker for temperance.
