MR. BODKIN’S VISIT

EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONS SERVICES The Minister of Civil Defence (the Hon. W. A. Bodkin) will address a public meeting in the Rangitikei County Council Chambers this (Tuesday) afternoon, at 2.30, on several important, phases of civil defence. The Minister will be accompanied by Colonel C. V. Ciochetto, M.C., M.M., regional commissioner, and Captain W. G. Lyons, M.C. HAWKESTONE GOLI’ CLUB COMPETITION GAMES Members of the above club are requested to make arrangements to play all competition games before the end of September. The links are in splendid order and during the weekend a number of competition games were played. Several of the competitions have reached the semi-final stage. In the President’s Cup. Mr. and Mrs. Fogelberg play Miss Hunter | and J. Hunter, Mrs. Kendrick and W Saywell play Mr. and Mrs. F. Green. In the senior championship the winner of the semi-final between C. Rubery and P. Gronn plays L. Saywell in the final game. ENGAGEMENT PARTY About twenty-five guests assembled at “Chelydra,” the residence of Mi. and Mrs. A. C. M. Parkinson, last Friday evening, the occasion being of a two-fold nature. Firstly, it was | their daughter's birthday, and secondly, as a mild surprise, the announcement of Isla’s engagement to Mr. Charles Smith was made. After the cutting of the birthday cake, Corporal R. M. H. Parkinson made the announcement of his sister's engagement. The assembly rose and drank the health of the young couple, according them musical honours. Mr. Charles Smith suitably replied. A pleasant evening soon passed away with novelty games interspersed with musical items, and was brought to a close, shortly after midnight by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” MATANUI TENNIS CLUB The annual meeting of the Matanui Tennis Club will be held in Mogridge and Son’s offices, Marton, to-morrow (Wednesday) evening, at 7.30. The annual report and balancesheet, election of officers, and general will constitute the business. All members and anyone interested are cordially invited to attend. CIVIC THEATRE, MARTON Cleverly extricating himself from the machinations of a notorious band of International crooks and aided by Mary Langdon, a newspaper reporter, and Monty, his friend. Simon Templar, the “Saint,” outwits his adversaries and brings an important code message safely back to England, thus providing “The Saint’s Vacation,” at the Civic Theatre to-night with highly sustained interest. Tops in excitement, tops in romance and tops in thrills, “Flying Blind,” newest in a trio of Paramount aviation films, brings to the screen a pulsequickening tale of foreign agents and their attempt to steal a vital defence secret. HUNTERVILLE GRAND CARNIVAL The Hunterville Patriotic Society are holding a grand carnival in the Hunterville Town Hall to-morrow (Wednesday) evening. There will be plenty of fun for young and old and the meat flowers and produce stalls will be laden with useful goods. The process will go to the Hunterville All-Purposes Appeal. DAFFODIL AND SPRING FLOWER SHOW The annual daffodil and spring Hower show will be held in the Civic Theatre. Marton, to-day and tomorrow, opening at 2 o’clock this afternoon. All exhibits must be staged ready for judging not later than 11.30 a.m. Gifts for the produce, apron and white elephant stalls will be appreciated. The show will be open each day from 2 till 5 and 7 to 10 p.m. A vocal and instrumental concert by first-class artists will be staged each evening. COURT LITTLE JOHN, A.O.F. The quarterly meeting of Court Little John, A.0.F., wilt be held this evening in the Druids’ Hall. Members are specially invited to attend.
