THE DIEPPE RAID
WAS THE PRICE TOO HIGH? New York, Sept. 19 The New York Herald Tribune, commenting on the lessons of Dieppe in the light of the detailed Canadian report which was published yesterday, says that the losses were undoubtedly high, indicating the grim nature of the German defences along the occupied coast as well as the gallantry of the 5000 Canadian troops participating, who constituted the great bulk of the attackers. “But it is not necessarily to high a price to pay for the lessons of the Dieppe operation, and neither is it a yardstick by which to measure the cost of opening up a second front, the newspaper continues. “Yesterday Major-General Hartle, commanding the American forces in Northern Ireland, asked: ‘ls it worth while to mar’yr the men of two army corps in order to shorten the war by possibly two years?’ If the issue were as stark and simple as that, could the nation hesitate over its answer?”
