RECORD TOTAL
AUSTRALIAN TAXATION FEDERAL EXPENDITURE Canberra, July 11. Australians paid a record total of £179,435,588 in Federal taxation in 1941-42, compared with £90,010,663 in 1939-40. The total Commonwealth expenditure, war and civil, for the year was £420,951,000. The Army spent £185,702,151, the Air Force £57,661,562, the Munitions Department £27,843,724, and the Navy £22,352,763. Our latest estimates the total Commonwealth expenditure during 194243 may be about £600,000,000 —about half the national income. Of this estimated total civil expenditure will take £115,000,000, and the rest will be spent on the war. Federal revenue for 1941-42 was £14,000,000 more than was expected in December. The Excise and Customs recipts were nearly £7,000,000 higher, and income tax £2,000,000 higher. For the first time since 1909-10 every State had a surplus.
