ATTACKED OFF MALTA

RAID ON ENEMY CONVOY DEFENCE’S HUNDREDTH VICTIM London, May 20. A communique received to-night from Malta says that aircraft of the Fleet Air Arn attacked an enemj convoy last night. A destroyer and a merchant ship were probably hit. I the latest Axis raids on the island the defenders have destroyed or crippled three more enemy planes. In the week which ended last night 55 Axis planes have been lost over Malta. Rugby. May 20. By the shooting down of a German fighter by the R.A.F. late on Monday afternoon. Malta’s defences brought the total of enemy aircraft destroyed over Malta during the first 18 days in May to 100. Up to 10.45 a.m. local time on Monday. one Italian bomber, and six German fighters had been destroyed, and five enemy fighters damaged.—B.O.W.
