MURDER CHARGE FACED
NATIVE FARM LABOURER STRANGLING OF STEP-DAI GH !EL ALLEGED (P.A.) Hamilton, May 12. A plea of not guilty was entered by ilohuaahinaka Kino, 36 years oi age, a Maori i’rrm labourer, before Mr. Justice Johnston at Hamilton to a charge of murdering his step-daughter, Rua Emery, at Otewa, Otorohanga, on February 14. Mr. H. T. Gillies and Mr. J. R. Fitzgerald prosecuted and Mr. J. F. Trapski appeared lor accused. Mr. Gillies said accused lived with his wife and the latter’s daughter, Rita Emery, aged 18, in a collage* on Tipping Brothers’ farm at Ohewa, Eari\ in February, Rita Emery tried lo break her association witn accused ancT took a position in Otorohanga. Evidence would show that Kino spent the evening of February 13 with the girl in Otorohanga. Early next morning the girl was struck on the head in a paddock a mile from Kino’s cottage. She was rendered unconscious and then strangled and killed. Mr. Gillies said Kino was a hard-working man of previous good character. Evidence was given by Jahu Ponga Kino, accused’s wife, and Dr. R. C. Bonnington, and the case was adjourned.
