PUTNEY BY-ELECTION

London, May 10. The Putney by-election resulted in •the election of Mr. H. N. Linstead, with 8788 i his opponent, Mr. Ackworth, securing 2939. Twenty-three per cent, of the electorate voted. The by-efection was the result of the death of Mr. Marcus Samuel. The Sunday Times, in a leader, says: "The whole question of choice of candidates n°eds to be reconsidered. The prime object ought to be to secure men whose opinions and personality will bring new quality into tne House of Commons.” Mr. Linstead is secretary of the Pharmaceutical Association.
