DAY-TO-DAY BASIS
' U.S.A. RELATIONS WITH VICHY ; (Reed. 7 p.m.) Washington, April 21. Mr. Cordell Hull to-day told the 1 Press that the United States policy towards the new collaborationist regime in Vichy would remain on a day-to-day basis. The Government’s ■ decisions will depend on future developments, including the reaction of the French people themselves to the new regime. Mr. Hull expressed doubt that the French people would’ endorse Laval’s policy of collaboration with Germany and reminded reporters of h’s previous statement, in which he said: “It remains to be seen whether Ihe French people will accept this preposterous status, paving the way for them in assisting Hitler as co-belliger-ents.” Mr. Hull said he had not received confirmation that Vichy had handed Japan. 60,000 tons of shipping. Mr. Hull assumed that Ambassador Leahy, whose wife died at Vichv today, would go to Washington shortly.
